When artist Chivas Clem moved back to Paris, Texas after more than a decade in NYC, he didn’t have the warmest memories of his rural hometown. As a kid, he sometimes felt like the only gay in the village. But starting in 2016, he started befriending young men in his neighborhood, many of them drifters — the kinds of guys who were stereotyped as bigots and blamed for Donald Trump’s election, when most of them didn’t even have the right to vote. All of them seemed misunderstood, and some of them a little bit gay. His exhibition ‘Shirttail Kin’, now up at Dallas Contemporary, shows a tender and sexy side to these tough, scruffy bros, but it’s no redneck romance. The show’s title is a Southern term for “chosen family”. Sweet!

Izzy Spears and I first met backstage at Homobloc, the super-huge and super-gay music festival in Manchester, where he headlined alongside some favorite queers, like Hercules and Love, Affair, Christeene, Olof Dreijer and LSDXOXO. Izzy’s blend of horror rap, punk and grunge goes hard — the title of his new album, BLOOD, SWEAT AND DAMNATION, sums up the vibe. We shared a sweaty hug and made plans to meet after the festival for an interview — clothing optional, so Izzy could show me his tribal dick tattoo. After a stroll through Manchester’s Gay Village, Izzy told me about growing up in the Black Israelite community of Atlanta and all his tour trade, though I got too dickstracted to write it all down. (It’s a big, um, tattoo.) A couple days later, between sound checks on his UK tour, we speak again, this time on the record.

Back over Easter Weekend, BUTT had the pleasure of co-hosting SISSY SMUT at Berlin's Volksbuhne theater — a night of radical queer cinema, deejays, and a so-called ‘Dark Room Drama’. Now our friend and co-host Matt Lambert has released a full cut of the burlesque extravaganza, featuring Camp Dad, Bleach, and many other scantily-clad performers, cruising each other onstage and in the aisles to a soundtrack of über-gay house classics and spoken word. On her first single release since 2017’s viral breakout EP ‘Transphobic’, the rapper and self-styled ‘Queen Of This Shit’ serves fast and cunty rhymes over throbbing bass. Produced by K.G. Last month at Honcho Campout, the week-long, fagtastic music festival in the backwoods of Pennsylvania, a little yellow flyer appeared, stapled to trees by the riverbank. “Piss On Voltzy”, it said, with handwritten instructions and a portrait of the eager pup in question. “All welcome”. I pictured the hopeful pup Xeroxing away at a print shop to make his dream come true. There was something touching about it. I met him by chance on one of the dancefloors, wearing his signature yellow-accented gear and urinal backpack, flyers in hand. It was like meeting a local celebrity. ‘Arf!’ he said with a sweet midwestern twang. ‘It’d mean a lot to me if you came!’ How could I say no to such a good boy? The next day, my camp lazed around, nursing hangovers and planning outfits. I roused my friends. ‘Come on, guys, we have to go pee on this pup!’ We followed the flyer’s directions to the a bridge over a river, and were amazed when we saw an army of 200 people, standing in a semicircle around the wiggling, barking, and already-slick doggo, each waiting their turn. Some went as singles and some as groups. Some delivered the goods with entertaining camp and some with seriously horny gusto. Some unleashed waterfalls, while a pee-shy-many barely managed a trickle. But after every piss-formance, the entire crowd would erupt in applause. And at the end, the praise the pissers got paled in comparison to Voltzy’s standing ovation. I tracked down this puppy prince for a report from the other end of the stream.
