Quentin Crisp’s Apartment
Visitors to this past weekend’s MIX Festival in New York City got the unique opportunity to hang out in the apartment of English writer and homosexual icon Quentin Crisp, despite the fact that Crisp has been dead for the past 11 years. Adrian Goycoolea and curator Phillip Ward, who maintains the Quentin Crisp Archives, faithfully recreated the size of the flamboyant wit’s East Village abode, and arranged Crisp’s personal effects around the room, with a few slight approximations to replace items like shopping bags which were no longer available. A TV played well-known bon mots from Crisp’s one-man show An Evening With Quentin Crisp, the most relevant of which was ‘There is no need to do any housework at all. After the first four years the dirt doesn’t get any worse.’ Photographer Jan Wandrag captured the installation as the dust was beginning to settle.
