Hi! I’m Frank and it’s time to update the L.A. Fag Map. I’ve lived in ‘The Lady’ for 23 years now. I’m an art director working in advertising and graphic design and I also write about art for Artillery Magazine. I’m originally from a small town in Illinois so I’m used to driving everywhere and having to dig to find alternative experiences, which is why this city is a good fit for me. LA doesn’t reveal itself right away. It requires some foreplay before it gives up the goods. Whatever you’re interested in is here in this sprawling multicultural megalopolis, you just have to do the legwork.
You know there are places in the Valley too- like the Bullet on Burbank Ave. If you are at Universal, Disney, or Warner Brothers in Burbank/the Valley and want to grab a drink after a meeting in a leather bar, the Valley has some too. Not everything in LA is over the hill.
The Bullet is fun. I like Fridays Oso (“Bears” en espanol) night there (with DJ Howie) for latin bears and their fans and pals! Also, try the Boulevard in Pasadena and Oil Can Harry’s in Studio City for their Saturday night old skool disco dance nights.
Cool new place downtown called THE LASH, just not gay, yet anyway…
For a faggy but artsy experience, come to the LA Art Book Fair at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Jan 31 through Feb 3. http://laartbookfair.net
The book fair was off the hook this year, one of the most fun events with the hottest art fags from all over S. California. Everyone needs to come out for this event next year!
I’ll be in LA between January 25th through he 29th. Anyone wanna grab a drink?
Frank, in two weeks I’ll be moving back from Berlin a jaded Angeleno. What’s a Westside boy to do when he’s missing a little BUTT-style raunchy rowdiness? I can’t go to Akbar every night…
In LA until the 27th and want to suck big di
cks daily.
do you know where i can go to find someone to fuck or fuck me
a bath house.
In L.A. from 23rd to 27th
See you!
At the risk of being deemed gay old skool, i have to recommend Outfest’s screening of “Johnny Guitar” on May 23 at the Downtown Independant. Nic Ray’s 1954′s classic will kick your ass by subverting the Western genre and traditional gender roles and it’s a full-on blast. Seriously. The film is NOT on DVD or netflix so don’t miss this rare screening. Oh, and Joan Crawford is in it.
Had delicious Burmese food last night at Yoma Myanmar, 713 E. Garvey Ave, Monterey Park, CA 91755 just 10 minutes east of downtown. Make sure to try the tea leaf salad if you’ve never had Burmese food before! The place is not fancy but the food is amazing and very inexpensive. A welcome break from Thai and Indian food!
Quick shout out to HOME restaurant in Silverlake off of Riverside. The mimosas are strong and gays a plenty. Plus the Soyrizo Scramble is off the hook.
+The Los Angeles Times
hmmmmm. can I please do a fag map. interesting choices. I do take it personal when you say the folks at TACOS DELTA didnt give you a napkin, i find that very hard to believe. I wrote a story for the Los Angeles seeking out the best Mexican Breakfast in LA and Tacos Delta took the cake. Not only is it the best Mexican homestyle food in Silver Lake the owners are and their family are some of the most humble, hardworking and nicest people on the planet. Not to mention, their son is an the military and continues to serve in the middle east. The 101 and The Baazar interesting choices.
Hey Leelo, I always enjoyed the food at Tacos Delta and I’m sure the napkin incident was an exception and not the rule. I put the 101 on my list because I’ve never had this dessert anywhere else and it’s pretty remarkable. Bazaar is dinner as theater and as douchey and sceney as it is, it is as specific to the LA experience as Sapp or El Taurino. Let’s go eat and chat sometime.
Things to eat in LA:
1) taco sampler at Guisados in Boyle Heights, East LA
2) brownie waffle sundae at the 101 Cafe, Hollywood
3) half chicken platter and/or pastrami with cheddar and jalepeno at Dino’s Burgers, 2 locations
4) exotic homemade ice cream flavors at Scoops LA, Silverlake
5) beef/chicken/pork rolls at 101 Noodles Express, Alhambra
6) gourmet peruvian at Mo Chica at Mercado Paloma, near USC
7) gourmet yucatan mexican at Chichen Itza, also at Mercado Paloma
8) philly cheese steak on air bread at Bazaar at SLS hotel, Weho
9) jade noodles at Sapp Coffee Shop, Hollywood
10) banh mi poutine, grilled squid, brocolli with soy at The Gorbals, downtown
11) calimari burrito, ceviche at Siete Mares, Silverlake
12) take out sausage/mushroom pizza from Casa Bianca, enjoyed with Racer 5 beer inside the Black Boar Pub next door, Eagle Rock
13) kaya toast at Street, Hollywood
14) soon tofu soup at Beverly Soon Tofu, Koreatown
15) ube cake from Red Ribbon filipino bakeries, citywide
time to do Dino’s again
we’ll be in southern california at the end of april :)))
Thanks Matt, I love your music and thanks for your LA tips. I eat at the Kitchen often. I’m not allowed to eat at Tacos Delta anymore because my husband got into it with them when they wouldn’t give him another napkin.
You may want to research S. Onofre; the last I heard, it’s no longer Nude (i’m not sure about Gay).
I’m surprised you don’t have “MJ’s” on hyperion on here.
Club Nur is at MJs, on the list above.
OK<time for an updater Mr.Rodriguez.And keep us informed about the Spotlight doc.Could we put a Faultline and the Akbar + surrounding bars(Tiki,Eagle,Hyperion places)) on the map for the touristas?
Faultline is mentioned in the Gran Burrito listing and The Eagle is on the list above. I love Tiki Ti but it’s not officially gay enough for the Butt listing. But it’s great! The bar at El Chavo is fun too.
Tonight (10/31/11) is the last night of Le Barcito which has been a gay bar since the ’60s and is the west coast birthplace of gay activism. It will be come a hipster restaurant to serve the quickly gentrifying neighborhood. Another gay bar bites the dust. Put down your Scruff and support your gay bars or they will disappear forever. RIP Le Barcito/aka Black Cat.
Damn! So sad I missed its final days. Loved Le Barcito!
Hey Chris, Spotlight sadly did close over Labor Day weekend. My friend Jeffrey is working on a documentary about the historic bar. The LA fag map will be revised shortly with updated entries, including Akbar. If you guys have any specific suggestions, let me know.
i want to come L.A.
(it’s overrated!)
It’s tons of fun, you just need a good tourguide!
Spotlight is closed y’all. So tragic. I agree with Pete, Akbar is worth checking out.
Thanks for the club/food locations info
Los Angeles is WAY more gay friendly! Time to update this!
Hey Jack, give me some of your LA gay favorite locations, curious to hear. Thanks.
King Taco (specially their hot salsa) and The taco places in Central Market in Downtown are the bomb for tacos, burritos y tortas…..
i think this needs to be updated QUE NO HOMIE?
Poquito Mas is fine but aimed at a gringo pallete. You can go on chowhound to read hundreds of posts about the best taco/burrito in LA but King Taco (a small, local chain), El Taurino or the taco trucks between Fountain and Santa Monica on Western are all rock solid. .
Love El Taurino. For those on the West Side, great truck (“El Oaxaqueno”) just south of Rose on Lincoln – great tacos and tortas.
Poquito Mas for tacos and burritos!! El mejor!
In ‘n Out?Go next door to a horrible place called Columbo’s,at least you can laugh and watch the music while you eat real food, there are more fun places to go to in Glendale ,Pasadena and the valle than bad hamburgerstand….Old Town Pasadena is tres gay too for shopping.
I love Columbos, lol.
