R.I.P. Will Munro
We were very saddened to hear today of the passing of Will Munro, who was interviewed by Billy Miller in BUTT #24 in 2008. Will, who suffered from cancer, was only 35 years old. To say he was a vital part of Toronto’s queer nightlife scene would probably be an understatement. In fact, little of Toronto’s queer culture would be the same today without the energy Will brought to throwing creative and dirty soirees like Vaseline at El Mocambo, along with his co-management of the cruisey Beaver Cafe where parties like Hotnuts and others thrived. Queers, punks, straights, gays, lesbians, trans men and women, all commingled, rocked out, and got off together, thanks to Will. When he wasn’t DJ-ing or throwing parties, Will made art, designed couture underwear, collected hundreds of pairs of vintage underwear, and worked the phones at a gay support help line. To learn more about Will check out this article by Bert Archer, or dig up your old copy of BUTT 24. He will be missed. Feel free to share any remembrances of him in the comments section.
